On the surface, many marriages seem to break up because of a “third party.” This is, however, a psyc

hological illusion. The other woman or the other man merely serves as a pretext for dissolving a marriage that had already lost its essential integrity.

从表面上看,许多婚姻似乎是因为有了“第三者”才破裂的。然而这只是一种心理幻觉。那个女人,或者那个男人,实际上掩盖了一个已经失却真正意义的婚姻的解体。

选词填空:For many Americans, 2013 ended with an unusually bitter cold spell.

Questions 36 to 45 are based on the following passage.

For many Americans, 2013 ended with an unusually bitter cold spell. November and December(36) early snow and bone-chilling temperatures in much of the country, part of a year when, for the first time in two(37), record-cold days will likely turn out to have outnumbered record-warm ones. But the U.S. was the exception; November was the warmest ever (38), and current data indicates that 2013 is likely to have been the fourth hottest year on record.

Enjoy the snow now, because (39)are good that 2014 will be even hotter, perhaps the hottest year since records have been kept. That’s because, scientists are predicting, 2014 will be an EI Niuo year.

EI niuo, Spanish for “the child”, (40) when surface ocean waters in the southern Pacific become abnormally warm. So large is the Pacific, covering 30% of the planet’s surface, that the(41 )energy generated by its warming is enough to touch off a series of weather changes around the world. EI Ninos are (42)with abnormally dry conditions in Southeast Asia and Australia. They can lead to extreme rain in parts of North and South America, even as southern Africa(43) dry weather. Marine life may be affected too; EI Ninos can (44 ) the rising of the cold, nutrient-rich(营养丰富的)water that supports large fish (45),and the unusually warm ocean temperatures can destroy coral(珊瑚).

We experience different forms of the sun's energy every day. The sun is the major source o
f energy for our planet. It causes the evaporation(蒸发)of water from the oceans and lakes. Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food.

Much of the energy that comes from the sun never reaches the earth's surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere, 30% is reflected by clouds or the earth's surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants to produce food.

Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the earth's surface back to the earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the sun to enter but prevent energy form. leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases.

When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. Dark-colored surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy.

According to the passage, the root cause for weather changes on the earth is

A.the atmosphere surrounding the earth

B.water from oceans and lakes

C.energy from the sun

D.greenhouse gases in the sky

听力原文:M: Have you heard that in another few years you may be able to buy a car that cha
nges colors every day to match the outfit you are wearing?

W: Oh, please be serious! I suppose they will change shapes as well. If you want a big car to take all your friends camping, I suppose you'll just be able to snap your fingers and make it happen. Or if you want a sporty two-seater, you could just tell the car what you wanted, and it would do the rest. Is that how it will work?

M: No, I am serious. They have found a way to alter the surface of metals so that they can reflect different colors just by passing a small amount of electricity over them.

W: Oh, I see. So anything that touches the outside of the car will get a shock. That sounds lovely.

M: It's only a tiny amount of electricity. It wouldn't be enough to shock anybody.

W: Well, it sounds pretty difficult to believe.

M: Yes, it's quite amazing. The important thing you have to remember is that the color of an object is really just an illusion created by the way light bounces off its surface. Engineers have been able to produce a car that changes colors at the touch of a button by slightly rearranging the position of the particles on the surface of the metal.

W: It sounds so amazing. But I guess it could be possible.

M: It is possible today. The only problem is that it is very expensive. To produce a car with a surface that changed colors would cost almost twice as much as what a regular car costs. For that much money you could just by the car and have it repainted twenty times, so it's not very practical yet.

W: Yes, but in other ways it could be more practical. If you took your car to be painted twenty times, it would use quite a bit of polluting chemicals, and it would take a long time.

M: You're right there, but how many people really get their car repainted that many time?

W: Hmm, I suppose you're right, but I sure would love to have my car match my outfit every day.

A.She is impressed.

B.She is doubtful.

C.She is shocked.

D.She is surprised.

Sunlight is free, but that is no reason to waste it. Yet even the best silicon solar cells
—by far the most【C1】______sort—convert only a quarter of the light that falls on them. Silicon has the【C2】______of being cheap: manufacturing improvements have brought its price to a point where it is snapping at the heels of fossil fuels.【C3】______many scientists would like to replace it【C4】______something fundamentally better. John Rogers, of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is one. The cells he has【C5】______can convert 42.5% of sunlight.【C6】______improved, Dr Rogers reckons, their efficiency could rise to 50%. Their【C7】______is that they are actually not one cell, but four, stacked one on top of another. Solar cells are made of semiconductors, and every type of semiconductor has a【C8】______called a band gap that is different from that of other semiconductors. The band gap【C9】______the longest wavelength of light a semiconductor can absorb (it is transparent to longer wavelengths). It also fixes the【C10】______amount of energy that can be【C11】______from shorter wavelength. The result is that long-wavelength photons are lost and short-wave ones incompletely utilised. Dr Rogers【C12】______this by using a different material for each layer of the stack. He chooses his materials【C13】______the bottom of the band gap of the top layer matches the top of the band gap of the one underneath, and so on【C14】______the stack. Each layer thus【C15】______off part of the spectrum, converts it efficiently into electrical energy and passes the rest on. The problem is that the materials needed to make these semiconductors are【C16】______But Dr Rogers has found a way to overcome this.【C17】______solar-cell modules are completely covered by semiconductor, but in his only 0.1% of the surface is so covered. The semiconducting stacks, each half a millimeter square, are【C18】______over that surface many dots. Each stack then has a pair of cheap glass lenses【C19】______over it. These focus the suns light onto the stack, meaning that all【C20】______light meets a semiconductor.

第10题
Without the atmosphere, there would be no weather, no wind, rain, snow, or clouds. Air is
all around us; we live at the bottom of a great ocean of air. It is invisible, but we can feel it when it moves. There are miles of all above us, pressing down with great weight on the earth and everything on it. Because air presses down on us from all directions at the same time, and because we are able to bear (忍受) this weight, we do not seem to feel it. But scientists have proved that air has this weight, and that anything that has weight creates (产生) a force called pressure. As changes in air pressure take place, they make air move.

Air is a gas that expands (膨胀) when heated, gets lighter, and moves upward. When air is

cooled, it gets heavier, sinks close to the earth's surface, and flows like water in a great river. As warm air rises, cold air rashes to take its place. Thus winds originate (起源). Tile winds that blow high above us are caused by the warmer air running away from colder air. The wind we feel near the earth's surface is the heavy colder air trying hard to catch the warmer air. Changes in temperature cause the air to move. And of course there are many changes, so air movements are taking place practically all the time.

The first paragraph mainly tells us______.

A.why we don't feel air

B.why atmosphere is important to us

C.why there is air surrounding us

D.why there is air pressure
