Some surveys show that a lot of people believe that the glare from snow causes snow-blindn

ess. Yet, wearing dark glasses or not, they find themselves suffering from headaches and watering eyes, and even snow-blindness, when exposed to several hours of "snow light".

The United States Army has now determined that glare from snow actually does not cause snow-blindness in troops in snow-covered country. Rather, a man's eyes frequently find nothing to focus on in a broad expanse of a wide snow-covered territory. His gaze, in consequence, continually shifts and jumps back and forth over the entire landscape in search of something he can look at. Finding nothing to focus on, hour after hour, the eyes never stop searching, and the eyeballs will become sore and eye muscles will ache. Nature reduces this uncomfortable feeling by producing more and more fluid which covers the eyeball. The fluid covers the eyeball in increasing quantity until vision becomes increasingly unclear. The result may be total, even though temporary, snow-blindness.

Experiments led the Army to a simple method of overcoming this problem. A small group of soldiers will be sent ahead of a main body of troops. They are trained to shake snow from evergreen bushes, creating a dotted line as they cross completely snow-covered landscape. Even these soldiers themselves throw lightweight, dark colored objects ahead, on which they, too, can focus. The men following them can then see something. Their gaze is arrested. Their eyes focus on a bush and, having found something to see, stop searching the snow-blanketed landscape. By focusing their attention on lone object at a time, the troops can cross the snow-covered wilderness without becoming hopelessly snow-blind or lost. In this way the problem of crossing a solid white territory is overcome.

Dark glasses have proved to be ______ in overcoming headaches, watering eyes and blindness caused by the glare from snow.

A.useless

B.useful

C.available

D.fruitless

TV Games Shows

One of the most fascinating things about television is the size of the audience. anovel can beon the best sellers list with asale of fewer than 100,000 copies, but apopular TV show might have70 million TV viewers. TV can make anything or anyone well-known overnight.

This is the principle behind quiz or game shows, which put ordinary people on TV to play agame for the prizes and money. aquiz show can make anyone A.star, and it can give away thou-sands of dollars just for fun. but all of this money can create problems. For instance ,in the 1950s,quiz shows were very popular in the US and almost everyone watched them. Charles Van Doren,an English instructor, became rich and famous after winning money on several shows. He even hadA.career asatelevision personality. but one of the losers proved that Charles Van Doren was cheat-ing. It turned out that the show&39;s producers, who were pulling the strings, gave the answers to themost popular contestants beforehanD. Why? because if the audience didn&39;t like the person whowon the game, they turned the show off. based on his story, amovie under the title Quiz Show is on40 years later.

Charles Van Doren is no longer involved with TV. but game shows are still here, though theyaren&39;t taken as seriously. In fact, some of them try to be as ridiculous as possible. There are showsthat send strangers on vacation trips together, or that try to cause newly-married couples to fight onTV, or that punish losers by humiliating them. The entertainment now is to see what people will dojust to be on TV. People still win money, but the real prize is to be in front of an audience of mil-lions.

TV can make abeggar world-famous overnight. 查看材料

Smart Exercise

Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr.

Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says: "While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can literally cause physical changes in the brain."

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician (儿科医师) , believes in the importance of exercise.

She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory.

In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning," says Margaret.

Older people can beef up their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants, exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain"s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

Research by Dr. Cameron seems to suggest that exercise can __________. 查看材料

B.change the way a person thinks
