W: Um, and ah, and it was really a torture. I didn't expect to have to do three interviews, but I did them all in the same day.

M: Three times in the same day, terrible indeed.

W: The first thing I did was interview with a group of about six people, and I think they included some department managers. And they asked me, ob, the usual questions: What I wanted to do with myself, you know, where I saw myself in ten years. Things like that...

M: And then.

And then I even had to have an interview with the general manager. And I was quite nervous for that one but I think I did a pretty good job. They said I'd find out in a couple of days if I'm going to be hired.

听力原文:W: Good morning, Tom! How are you?

M: Not bad! What about you?

W: Fine. Tom, you didn’t show up yesterday evening, did you?

M: I am sorry I didn’t. I had planned to go to your party, but was caught up by a program about Oprah Winfrey. I simply could not help sticking to the television until it was too late for your party.

W: Oprah Winfrey?

M: Yes. She is a US talk show hostess, and the queen of all talk! Come on, haven’t you ever heard of her?

W: Oh, I remember. She is enormously influential, and it is said that her influence extends far beyond the media! She must have a distinguished family background, don’t you think so?

M: No. on the contrary, her birth place was actually notorious for its poverty. But as she applied herself to study and work, she later became America’s first African-American news anchor.

W: She is really great! Then, have you watched her talk show for a long time?

M: Of course! She is frank and genuine. She never spreads gossip or scandal!

W: That would certainly make a difference among all the trash TV we have today!

M: You bet! That program I watched last night will be shown again this afternoon.

W: Really! I will make sure not to miss it! Bye for now!

M: See you later!

听力原文:W: Hi,...Pete?

M: Nice to meet you, Mrs. Morton.

W: It's nice to meet you, too. So, are you enjoying the party?

M: Yeah, it's great. This might be the last time I see some of these people for a long time so I've been pretty busy. I haven't had much time to sample the food.

W: I know what you mean. I can't believe that all you kids are finally graduating. Donna has grown up so fast! Do you have any plans after graduation?

M: Well, I've applied for a teaching job overseas. I guess I'll probably find out if I get the job or not next week.

W: You're more adventurous than Donna. She's going to take a job right here in town, at least for the summer. After that, who knows?

M: Well, you might be seeing me around here for a while longer, too. Oh,...wait a minute. I'm sorry. I think Dan is leaving the party. Excuse me, Mrs. Morton, I've got to talk to him before he goes.

M: Thanks. Thanks a lot.

听力原文:M: I can't believe that we're almost out of high school.

W: I can't either. What are you going to do after graduation? Go to college?

M: Yes, but I haven't decided where to go until now.

W: Do you want to go to a big university or a small one?

M: I think I'd rather go to a small university, so the classes wouldn't be so large.

W: Do you want to go out of the state or just stay here?

M: I'd like to stay in the state, so that I will be close to home.

W: It sure would be nice to be close enough to come home and visit family on weekends when you want to. Do you like a public or private university?

M: Well, I like the atmosphere of a private church-owned school. The students are more serious about school, and there isn't a lot of partying.

W: That's true, but private universities are so expensive. How are you going to pay for it?

M: I've applied for a scholarship, and my parents have agreed to help me pay for some of the expenses. What about you? What are you going to do next fall?

W: I'm going to Oregon State University.

M: Oh, I know a lot of kids who've gone there; they really liked it. Why did you choose it?

W: Well, a lot of my friends are going there, and the school has a good teacher preparation program. You know to be a teacher has been my dream for a long time.

M: Yes, and I hear they have a really great basketball team, too.

听力原文:W: Hi, Peter. I just wondered if you fancied coming out for a coffee.

M: Oh, I was just writing a letter.

W: Writing a letter! Is your phone out of order?

M: No —well, not exactly a letter. Ben's applied for a job at a children's summer camp, and they've asked me for a character reference. He must have put me down as one of his referees.

W: Oh dear —you're not going to tell them the truth, are you?

M: What do you mean?

W: Well, he's a self-important show-off.

M: Oh, come on, he's not that bad —I mean, kids love him. He's always entertaining his little brother's friends with his magic tricks and silly jokes.

W: Oh yes, he's great with children —but he's a big kid himself, isn't he?

M: Yes, I suppose he is a bit immature.

W: Also, he hates taking orders from anybody. Do you remember that job he had last summer in a restaurant? He ended up throwing a bucket of water over the chef when she asked him to wash the kitchen floor.

M: Oh no, don't remind me. He won't do anything he doesn't enjoy, will he? Mind you, he did run that restaurant single-handed when the chef and two of the waiters were off sick with food poisoning.

W: That's true. He's good at a crisis. But having said that, he's good at causing a crisis as well —I mean, you know the food poisoning was his fault, don't you?

M: Oh, yes —oh dear, this isn't helping. OK. Let's go out for a coffee.

(23)

A.He is applying for a job at a summer camp.

B.His telephone is out of order.

C.He is writing a character reference for Ben.
