听力原文:W: Recently quite a few government officials have been arrested for taking huge b
ribes.

M: Yes, that's true. But did you hear that they still have a last chance to save themselves?

W: No. How?

M: Well, from last year a few cities, including Marseille, Nantes, Paris and Calais, have introduced a new system to combat corruption. They opened a so called "anticorruption account."

W: What is the use of the account?

M: It is for officials who have received bribes. They may anonymously deposit money equivalent to the bribes they have accepted within a given time. The bribes may have been cash, presents or securities. Then they can get receipts that make them immune to a certain degree.

W: Does that mean their penalty may be reduced if they are found in the future to get involved in a bribery scandal?

M: Yes. With these receipts, the officials may be treated the same way as those who have rejected bribes.

W: I wonder how many officials have used this account.

M: Actually, the "anti-corruption account" in Nantes alone received deposits that totaled more than 400,000 francs after the local government issued an act stating that bribes should be deposited into the account within a given time.

W: Oh, really? But I doubt whether it's a good practice.

M: In fact, many legal experts share your view. They think the practice lacks a legal basis and is not consistent with current criminal laws, or even in contradiction to the laws. They believe the practice shows the idea of "ruling society by men," and this idea conflicts with the more democratic concept of "ruling society by law."

W: Yes, I agree with them.

M: But still other experts are convinced that this is a very positive measure under the current circumstances of our country. Anyway, it provides a channel for the bribe takers to save themselves. And it can help create a positive atmosphere for the building of a clean government.

听力原文:W: Hey, Tom.

M: How are things going, Mary?

W: Great, I just finished my last exam for the semester, and now I'm going home to get ready for summer break. What about you?

M: I'll finish my last exam this afternoon. I'm on my way to the library now to finish studying for it. Where are you going this summer?

W: I'm planning to work in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. I'll be studying whales.

M: That sounds like a great job. I'll be working nearby on the coast at Nantucket.

W: What are you planning to do on the coast?

M: My uncle owns a restaurant there, so I'll be working as a waiter at night and then helping him do some accounting a few days each week. I have to save a lot of money for the next school year. Maybe we can get together and go to the beach this summer since we'll be living near each other.

W: That sounds good. I'll be working on a boat during July, and I won't return to shore for the entire month. But in June and later in August, I'll be working in the laboratories and I could drive up and see you in Nantucket.

M: OK. My uncle tells me June is the best time to go there before the town gets too crowded with tourists. Call me be fore you leave tomorrow and I'll give you a phone number where I can be reached this summer.

W: All right. I'll talk to you later. Good luck with your exam!

M: Thanks!

听力原文:A supermarket club card is a new way for people to save money on items they buy.

听力原文: A supermarket club card is a new way for people to save money on items they buy. People used to cut out coupons to save money. Now they use a card that looks like a credit card when they pay for items. Only people with cards can get the lower price.

To get a card, people must give out their name, address, and other personal information. Everything club card users buy is stored on a computer in a file with their name on it. In the coupon days, no one kept track of the things people bought. Now, computers allow huge amounts of information to be saved.

In order to save money with the cards, people could lose privacy. So far, the information, or data, is private. But that could change. There are many companies who might be interested in knowing what people buy. For instance, an insurance company might want to know if their clients buy healthy food, or if people buy a lot of medicine from the store.

People want to make sure there are laws to protect data kept on computers. Stores that use club cards have promised to keep the information private. Some people are afraid the stores might change their minds if companies offered enough money. Some people say the information is worth as much as treasure.

Credit card companies can't tell others where you shop. Telephone companies can't sell a list of numbers you call. But all of this information is on a computer and could be given out. Some people think the store's promise is good enough. Others aren't so sure.

(33)

A.Grocery stores.

B.Video stores.

C.Airlines.

D.All of the above.

听力原文:M: Today, I'm interviewing nine-year-old Carol about her feelings on how people c
an help save the environment. Good evening, Carol.

W: Good evening, I'm glad to be here.

M: So, Carol, how can we save the environment?

W: By saving water.

M: Well, how can we do that?

W: By not using too much water when we wash dishes, take a bath, and when we do other things, like watering the plants outside.

M: Oh, I think I can do that. What else?

W: We should try to make our environment tidy.

M: What can we do?

W: When drinking or eating something outside, you should keep the garbage until you find a trashcan to put it in because littering makes our planet dirty. Do you like seeing trash all over the ground?

M: No, I don't. Do you have any final suggestions?

W: Yes. We shouldn't waste paper because trees are being cut down to make the paper. By recycling paper, we save the forests where animals live.

M: So, how can children recycle paper, I mean, everyday?

W: Well, for example, when I was in kindergarten, I used to save the newspapers so that I could make things out of them, like paper trees, instead of just throwing them away.

M: Good idea! What do you do now?

W: Now, the children in our neighbourhood collect newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling centre.

M: That's great. Well, thanks Carol for your ideas.

W: You're welcome.

(27)

A.The girl's father

B.The girl's teacher.

听力原文:M: Hi, Mary. Do you want to start writing a lab report after we finish this exper
iment?

W: I can't. In fact I need to finish the experiment early because I'm going over to the Psychology Department to talk to Professor Elizabeth about a job vacancy. And it sounds pretty interesting. It involves helping with your study on learning style. You know, about how some people learn best by sight, while others learn best by hearing or touch. Any way for her study she's taking some high school students who aren't doing very well in their classes and testing them to find out what their learning styles are. Then tutors, people like me, will work with them presenting material to them in their particular learning style.:

M: Mm, that is interesting. Now will you mostly do the testing or the tutoring? And are you getting paid for this?

W: Both I hope. I want to be involved from start to finish. I'm sure we'll get something, though, probably not much. Anyway it doesn't matter. To me, I just want to have some experience.

M: Yeah. And it'll be nice to help those high school students too. Do you have any idea what the schedule is like? It sounds great.

W: That's what I thought when I saw the ad. You know you could do it too. You don't have to be in her classes to work on the study. From late afternoon to evening for tutoring I think. After all the kids are in regular classes until three thirty. If you like, come along. We will save the lab report for later. But we'd better make sure we do a good job on our experiment first.

What are the speakers talking about?

A.A chemistry assignment.

B.A study that their chemistry professor did.

C.A class that the woman is taking.

D.A possible job.
