听力原文: Why do we cry? Can you imagine life without tears? Not only do tears keep your eyes lubricated, they also contain a substance that kills certain bacteria so they can't infect your eye. Give up your tears, and you'll lose this onthespot defense. Nobody wants to give up the flood of extra tears you produce when you get something physical or chemical in your eyes. Tears are very good at washing this irritating stuff out. Another thing you couldn't do without your tears is cry from joy, anger or sadness. Humans are the only animals that produce tears in response to emotions, and most people say a good cry makes them feel better. Many scientists, therefore, believe that crying somehow helps us cope with emotional situations. Tear researcher, Winifred, is trying to figure out how it hap pens. One possibility he says is that tears discharge certain chemicals from your body, chemicals that build up during stress. When people talk about crying it out, "I think that might actually be what they are doing", he says. If Fred is right, what do you think will. happen to people who restrain their tears? Boys, for example, cry only about a quarter as often as girls once they reach teenage years, and we all cry a lot less now than we did as babies. Could it possibly be that we face less stress? Maybe we found another ways to deal with it, or maybe we just feel embarrassed.

(33)

A.Why people hold back their team.

B.Why people cry.

C.How to restrain one's mars.

D.How tears are produced.

听力原文:M: I really appreciate your filling me in on yesterday's lecture.

W: No problem. I thought you might want to go over it together. And, anyway, it helps me review. Hope you're feeling better now.

M: I am. Thanks. So, you said she talked about squid.'? Sounds a little strange.

W: Well, actually, it was about the evolution of sea life -- a continuation from last week. The octopus and the squid descended from earlier creatures with shells. They survived by shedding their shells somewhere between 200 and 500 million years ago.

M: That's a pretty long span of time.

W: I know. That's what she said, though. To be precise. "Exactly when they emerged is uncertain …and why is still unexplained."

M: Some squid are really huge. Can you imagine something that big if it still had a shell?

W: Actually, it's because they lost their shells that they could evolve to a bigger size.

M: Makes sense. But some are really huge. I've read about fishermen that caught squid that weighed over a ton. Did she talk about how that happens?

W: Not really. But she did mention some unusual cases. In 1933 in New Zealand they caught a squid…let's see here… it was twenty—two yards long. Its eyes were eighteen inches across. Can you imagine?

M: Reminds me of all those stories of sea monsters.

W: Dr. Simpson thinks there are probably even larger ones that haven't been found because squid are intelligent and fast—so they can easily get away from humans. Maybe some of those monster stories are true.

(20)

A.Mating habits of squid and octopus.

B.The evolution of certain forms of sea life.

C.The study of marine shells.

D.Survival skills of sea creatures.

Three Ways to Become More Creative

Most people believe they don&39;t have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination, but most of us once, when we become adults, forgets how to access it. Creativity isn&39;t always connected with great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you.

This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think as many as you can. "i&39;he next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original present; you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the night. Imagine that normal limitations don&39;t exist.

You have as much time/space/money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn to ski (滑雪), you can now practice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January.

Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators (谈判者) use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: what does this character want? Why can&39;t she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself in their shoes. The best fishermen think like fish!

According to the passage, when we become adults,__________. 查看材料

A.most of us are no longer creative

B.we are not as imaginative as children

C.we can still learn to be more creative

D.we are unwilling to be creative

听力原文:M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest?

W: Redwood? No, I've never seen a redwood tree, is it red?

M: Yes, its bark is kind of red. I recently had a chance to go to the Mill National Park, north of San Francisco. You can't imagine how big they are.

W: Yeah, how big?

M: The coast redwoods are the tallest living things. Some are more than three hundred and fifty feet high. But none of the trees at Mill is that high. You have to go further north in California to see the tallest trees.

W: You said that Mill is near San Francisco? I used to think it must be quite a tourist attraction.

M: Yes, it's less than an hour's drive away, so it's easy to get to.

W: I've heard that many redwood trees are thousands of years old. Are the ones in Mill that old?

M: The oldest documented age for a coast redwood is more than two thousand years. The trees at Mill are 400 to 800 years old.

W: Why have they survived so long?

M: They have remarkable resistance to forest fires. Their tough, thick bark protects the trees during a fire. The coast redwoods also like a damp, foggy climate.

W: Then since Mill is near foggy San Francisco, it must be ideal for the trees' survival.

M: Have you ever visited a redwood forest?

听力原文: No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form. of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.

Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping imagine how you would manage if you could not get on to buses or trains. How would you cope if you could not hear the traffic? But there are still other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully understand what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual personality and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

(26)

A.There are many disabled people in the world.

B.The number of disabled people in India is the greatest.

C.India has twice as many disabled people as in Canada.

D.It is impossible to get an exact figure of the world's disabled people.

听力原文:M: Welcome to my house!

W: Well, Mr. Robinson, I' m greatly surprised with all the work you've done on your house. (19)How long have you been working on it?

M: (19)I first became engaged in Do-it-yourself work several years ago. You see, my son Paul is disabled since childhood. (21)He's always in the wheelchair and(20)I just had to make some changes for him to the house.

W: Then, what sort of changes did you make?

M: First of all, some practical things to help Paul. Just imagine the problems a disabled person would have in your house. We need a large house with wide corridors so that Paul could move from one room to another as he like.

W: What else did you do?

M: By the time I'd altered everything for Paul, Do-it—yourself work had become a hobby of mine. I really enjoyed doing things with my own hands.

W: What are you working on now?

M: I've just finished the kitchen. (21)Now I'm building an extension so that Paul will have a large room on the ground floor where he can work.

W: I heard that you have got a prize of $10 000 in the Do-it-yourself Competition. How are you going to spend it?

M: (22)I'm hoping to start my oven business soon so that I can convert ordinary houses for disabled people. I think I've become an expert on the subject.

(23)

A.For several months.

B.For seven years.

C.For a year or two.

D.For several years.
