听力原文: People say that to get up early in three mornings is equal to one day of time. Early rising is beneficial in more than one way. First, it helps to keep us fit. We all need fresh air. But air is never so fresh as early in the morning. Besides, it improves our health to take our morning exercises.

Secondly, early rising helps us in our studies. In the morning our mind is clear, and we learn more quickly. We find it easier to memorize what we learn. The study is very efficient then.

Thirdly, early rising enables us to plan our work for the day. We cannot work well without a proper plan. Just as the plan for the year should be made in foe spring, so the plan for the day should be made in the morning.

Fourthly, early rising gives us enough time to get ready for our work, such as to brush our teeth, take a shower, get dressed, and eat our breakfast properly.

Finally, there is less traffic on the way. Buses and cars are not crowded, and there are less traffic jams. The fore, it takes less time to get to our schools and work places.

Late risers may find it very difficult to cultivate the habit of early rising. Since they already know the benefits of early rising, they ought to make up their minds and make a special effort to do so.

(30)

A.Early risers and late risers.

B.Benefits of early rising.

C.How to get up early.

D.How not to be late for work.

根据以下材料,回答题。

A Letter from Alan-

I have learnt of a plan to build three hundred houses on the land called Parson"s Place by the football ground. Few people know about this new plan to increase the size of our town. For me, Parson"s Place is special because it is a beautiful natural area where local people can relax——the small wood has many unusual trees and the stream is popular with fishermen and bird-watchers. It"s very quiet because there are few houses or roads nearby. I think that losing this area will be terrible because we have no other similar facilities in the neigh bour hood.

I am also against this plan because it will cause traffic problems. How will the people from the new houses travel to work? The motorway and the railway station are on the other side of town. There fore these people will have to drive through the town centre every time they go anywhere.

The roads will always be full of traffic, there will be nowhere to park and the tourists who come to see our lovely old buildings will leave. Shops and hotels will lose business. If the town really needs more homes, the empty ground beside the railway station is a more suitable place.

No doubt the builders will make a lot of money by selling these houses. But,in my opinion, the average person will quickly be made poorer by this plan. As well as this, we will lose a very special place and our town will be much less pleasant.

I am going to the local government offices on Monday morning to protest about this plan and I hope that your readers will join me there. We must make them stop this. plan before it is too late.

Why has Alan written this letter? 查看材料

A.To persuade the government to build new houses.

B.To protest about a new motorway near the town.

C.To encourage more people in the town to use Parson"s Place.

D.,To inform. other people about the builders" plans.

听力原文:W: Excuse me, is that seat taken?

M: No, it's free, I think.

W: Right, I'll take it. Here I am. I thought I'd never make it.

M: What, catching the plane?

W: Yes, my brother insisted on driving out to the airport. The traffic was terrible, there being an accident or something.

M: I always travel on the airport bus. I know you waste a certain amount of time waiting around doing nothing. But at least you're certain that you'll be on time for the plane.

W: You're right. Better late than never. But of course, better never late. I try to make it at exactly 11 o'clock. That's when our flight is supposed to take off.

M: See they are starting to check on the seat belts. I suppose it won't be long now.

W: The take-off is the only interesting thing about flight, in my opinion.

M: Well, I don't know. Landing can have its moment especially when the weather is bad.

W: Oh, that reminds me. The weather report this morning said sunny and warm. I don't see any clouds. So we'11 be fine.

Where are the speakers?

A.On a plane.

B.On an airport bus.

C.In the waiting room.

ur ago and I was really desperate.

M: I am terribly sorry that I'm late, Jane, This morning has been a real mess, I didn't think I could mange to be here.

W: Why are you late? You know, the graphs you are holding are very important for our presentation.

M: Yes, I know, I'll tell you about it later. Ok, let's see how we are doing on time. Two groups are still ahead of us, aren't they? That means we've got about twenty minutes to prepare for our presentation on the rights of the consumers and the analysis of the stock market...

W: You do look cold. What happened to you?

M: I've been standing outside in the cold weather for over an hour waiting for a bus.

W: Over an hour? But your apartment was only a ten-minute bus ride to our campus.

M: On normal conditions, but the bus was delayed because of the weather and when I stepped into a drugstore to call home for a ride, the bus went by. But there was no one at home, I had to wait another forty five minutes for the next bus.

W: Er ... you are really unlucky today. Well, we still get twenty minutes to gather our wits together.

M: We'd better stop chatting; People are turning around and looking at us.

(23)

A.Because there was a traffic jam.

B.Because he got up late.

C.Because his apartment is far away from the campus.

D.Because he missed a bus and had to wait for another one.

LECCO, Italy — Each morning, about 450 students travel along 17 school bus routes to 10 el
ementary schools in this lakeside city at the southern tip of Lake Como. There are zero school buses.

In 2003, to confront the triple threats of childhood obesity, local traffic jams and — most important — a rise in global greenhouse gases abetted by car emissions, an environmental group here proposed a retro-radical concept: children should walk to school.

They set up a piedibus (literally foot-bus in Italian) — a bus route with a driver but no vehicle. Each morning a mix of paid staff members and parental volunteers in fluorescent yellow vests lead lines of walking students along Lecco? s twisting streets to the schools? gates, Pied Piper-style, stopping here and there as their flock expands.

At the Carducci School, 100 children, or more than half of the students, now take walking buses. Many of them were previously driven in cars. Giulio Greppi, a 9-year-old with shaggy blond hair, said he had been driven about a third of a mile each way until he started taking the piedibus. “I get to see my friends and we feel special because we know it? s good for the environment,” he said.

Although the routes are each generally less than a mile, the town? s piedibuses have so far eliminated more than 100,000 miles of car travel and, in principle, prevented thousands of tons of greenhouse gases from entering the air, Dario Pesenti, the town? s environment auditor, estimates.

The number of children who are driven to school over all is rising in the United States and Europe, experts on both continents say, making up a sizable chunk of transportation? s contribution to greenhouse-gas emissions. The “school run” made up 18 percent of car trips by urban residents of Britain last year, a national survey showed.

In 1969, 40 percent of students in the United States walked to school; in 2001, the most recent year data was collected, 13 percent did, according to the federal government? s National Household Travel Survey.

Lecco? s walking bus was the first in Italy, but hundreds have cropped up elsewhere in Europe and, more recently, in North America to combat the trend. Towns in France, Britain and elsewhere in Italy have created such routes, although few are as extensive and long-lasting as Lecco? s.

Chokwe Selassie is on a mission to help drivers avoid potholes (路面坑洞) .The eighth-grader got his inspiration on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. “I decided I was going to do something about the pothole problem in my city,”said Chokwe. His solution: an app that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead.

Chokwe developed the app with his friends,“When the app detects a pothole, it is highlightedin red,” Chokwe says. “And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep.” Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they encounter, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson. “It works by using the city’s 311 call system, soit uses information already stored in a database,” Chokwe says. Throughthe call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems—which include potholes. As Chokwe and his friends worked on the app, they also went street by street throughout the city. They determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test it.

Although the app isn’t yet available for sale,Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The app remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. And then he wants to go even farther. “I want to keep working on the app until it’s nationwide, ” Chokwe says.

Chokwe Selassie got the idea to develop the app from ________.

Drivers can also use Chokwe’s app to ________.A.report emergency traffic problems

B.look for information other than potholes

C.choose safer routes without potholes

D.avoid traffic jam caused bypotholes

To develop the app, Chokwe and his friends ________.A.reported potholes to 311 call system

B.conducted field trips onthe streets

C.built their own information database

D.collected samples in their neighborhood

We can learn from the last paragraph that Chokwe ________.A.is quite successful
