听力原文: In the mid 1940s, Ruth and Elliot Handler owned a company that made wooden pictu

re frames. It was in 1945 that Ruth and Elliot Handler joined with their close friend Harold Mattson to form. company that would be known for the most famous and successful doll ever created. This company would be named Mattel, MATF for Mattson, and EL for Elliot.

In the mid 1950s, while visiting Switzerland, Ruth Handler purchased a German Lilli doll. Lilli was a pretty fashion doll first made in 1955. She was originally fashioned after a famous cartoon character in the West German Newsletter, Build.

Lilli is the doll that would inspire Ruth Handler to design the Barbie doll. With the help of her technicians and engineers at Mattel, Barbie was born. Ruth then hired Charlotte Johnson, a fashion designer, to create Barbie' s wardrobe. It was in 1958 that the patent of Barbie was obtained. This should be a fashion doll unlike any of her time. She would be long limbed, shapely, beautiful, and only 11.5 inches tall. Ruth and Elliot would name their new fashion doll after their own daughter, Barbie.

In 1959, the Barbie doll would make her way to the New York Toy Show and receive a cool reception from the toy buyers.

Barbie has undergone a lot of changes over the years and has managed to keep up with current trends in hairstyles, makeups and clothing. She is a reflection of the history of fashion since her introduction to the toy market.

Barbie has universal appeal and collectors both young and old enjoy time spent and memories made with their dolls.

听力原文: In the 19th century it was common to hear people in Europe and America say that the resources of the sea were unlimited. For example, a noted biologist writing in the mid 1800s commented that all of the great sea-fish industries are inexhaustible. Today there's evidence that the resources of the sea are as seriously threatened as those of the land and the air, and the concern of conservationists now includes sea-fish as well as the African elephant, the Indian tiger and the American eagle. Further, the threat to fish is more alarming in some ways than the threat to birds and land animals because fish are a much needed food resource. Many people throughout the world depend on fish as an important part of their diets, and a decline in the fish supply could have extensive effects on hunger and population.

(23)

A.That they were in infinite.

B.That they should be carefully conserved.

C.That they were declining.

D.That they were limited.

听力原文: People always seem to be looking for ways to get rich quickly. So when gold was discovered in California in the mid 1800's, hundreds and hundreds of people rushed in, hoping to get a part of the wealth. Today, gold in California continues to have as much of an appeal as it did over one hundred years ago. Modem prospectors in the form. of mining corporations have headed back to the same area to use new techniques for locating the gold that old time prospectors left behind. These modern prospectors, however, do not have some of the problems the old timers had. Anxious to seek a fast fortune, many of those early prospectors arrived before law and order were established. One such person was William Waldo. He established a relief committee that collected money and supplies to help save the lives of countless people who were caught in the mountains by early snowstorms before they even reached California.

(26)

A.Better land.

B.Quick wealth.

听力原文: This week some big internet sites were so busy that they stopped working. Hackers or people who break into other people's computers did it. Experts think programs called Tribal Village were used.

The programs worked like time bombs. The hackers put software on other people's computers. The people do not even know. The software just sits and waits until the hacker starts it. When the hacker wants, all the computers call the same web site. This week Yahoo, Amazon and CNN were called.

The costs are growing. These web sites make money from advertising. People go to the web sites for information and news. If the web site is not, working, they will go to other sites.

Yahoo got many calls. It was like 104 million people dialing in at once.

The website AntiOnline put the software on its site. They hope someone will make a fix.

The only way to stop the hackers is to stop them from getting into computers. Now it is easy to get into many computers.

Webmasters are in a tough spot. The goal is to have a site open and easy to reach. This also makes them open to hackers.

Why do hackers do this? Probably because other hackers will praise them. The hackers could also be sick and tired of the commercialization of the Internet. 5o far all of the targets have been very large, mid very commercial.

(33)

A.Someone who breaks into and uses someone else's computer.

B.Someone who breaks commercials.

C.Someone who fixes someone else's computer.

D.Someone who does not know about computers.
