Each day, 50,000 shiny, fireenginered apples work their way through a sprawling factory in
Swedesboro, N.J. Inside, 26 machines wash them, core them, peel them, seed them, slice them and chill them. At the end of the line, they are deposited into little green bags featuring a jogging Ronald McDonald.

From there, the bags make their way in refrigerated trucks to thousands of McDonald's restaurants up and down the Eastern Seaboard. No more than 14 days after leaving the plant, the fruit will take the place of French fries in some child's Happy Meal. The apple slices, called Apple Dippers, are a symbol of how McDonald's is trying to offer healthier food to its customers? And to answer the many critics who contend that most of its menu is of poor nutritional quality.

It remains to be seen whether these new offerings will assuage the concerns of public health officials and other critics of McDonald's highly processed fat and calorie—laden sandwiches, drinks and fries. So far, they have notat least not entirely. But this much is already clear: Just as its staple burgerandfries meals have made McDonald's the largest single buyer of beef and potatoes in the country, its new focus on fresh fruits and vegetables is making the company a major player in the $80 billion American produce industry.

The potential impact goes beyond dollars and cents. Some people believe that McDonald's could influence not only the volume, variety and prices of fruit and produce in the nation but also how they are grown.

According to the text, what will be found in some children's Happy Meal instead of French fries?

A.Apple pies.

B.Hamburger.

C.Apple dippers.

D.Apple flavor French.

It is difficult to estimate the number of youngsters involved in home schooling, where
children are not sent to school and receive their formal education from one or both parents.Legislation and court decisions have make it legally possible in most states for parents to educate their children at home, and each year more people take advantage of that opportunity.

Supporters of home education claim that it is less expensive and far more efficient than mass public education. Moreover they quote several merits: relief of school overcrowding, added curricular and pedagogical (课程和教学法) alternatives, strengthened family relationships, lower dropout rates, increased motivation, higher standardized test scores, and reduced discipline problems.Supporters of home schooling also believe that it provides the parents with the opportunity to reinforce their moral values through education.

Critics of home schooling movement claim that it creates as many problems as it solves. They acknowledge that,in a few cases, home schooling offers educational opportunities superior to those found in most public schools, but few parents can provide such educational advantages. Some parents who withdraw their children form. the schools in favor of home schooling have an inadequate educational background and insufficient formal training to provide a satisfactory education for their children.Typically, parents have fewer, not more technological resources available than do schools. However, the relatively inexpensive computer technology that is readily available today is causing some to challenge the notion that home schooling is in any way not so good as more highly structured classroom education.

Finally,a sociological (社会学) concern is the restricted social interaction experienced by children who are educated at home.Technology will never replace the pupil-teacher relationship. Also, while relationships with parents and brothers and sisters may be improved, children taught at home may develop a distorted (歪曲的) view of society.

第10题
Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than of their families.
Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school. Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they many become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned about the commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers. Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet(字母) and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live. Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive(被动的) consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it. Which of the following statements is NOT based on the passage?

A. Parents are worried about the influence from television on their children

B. Television has much influence on children

C. Both parents and their children like watching educational television

D. Some critics think that television is no good for children
