听力原文: Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But w

hen he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care was the power of his peer group. The lack of right male role models in many of their lives — at home and particularly in the school environment — means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against. They dont see men succeeding in society so it doesnt occur to them that they could make something of themselves. Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture is all-powerful. Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them. Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a childs peers. You have to do it one-to-one, because that is when you see the real child. Its pointless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games. Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems — somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children. Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. 22. Why did Tom give up studying? 23. What seems to have a bad effect on students like Tom? 24. What should schools do to help the problem schoolboys? 25. When is a teachers work most effective with a schoolboy?22.

A.Peer groups.

B.A special unit.

C.The student judges.

D.The home environment.

听力原文:Geography as a subject has been taught at Illinois State University since a year

听力原文: Geography as a subject has been taught at Illinois State University since a year after it founding ins 1857. The Department came into existence in 1860 with the creation of the Division of History and Geography, and in 1902 was established as a separate department. By either measure, the Geography Program at Illinois State is one two or three oldest in the country. It is also one of the first programs established on the Illinois State campus. Today, there are nine tenure line faculty members and one full-time instructor.

Geology at Illinois State dates to the appearance of John Wesley Powell, but after his departure eighty-seven years elapsed until the Department hired its next academic geologist, Tom Searight in 1959. The undergraduate major in Geology was established in 1969 with three faculty members. In 1993 a Master program in hydrogeology was inaugurated, and the geology faculty grew to its current complement of seven with one full-time instructor.

Although the early emphasis among the department faculty was on teaching, it is clear that many were active scholars as well, and that tradition continues today. Current faculty have active research agendas, and bring that experience into the classroom.

(33)

A.In 1857.

B. In 1860.

C. In 1902.

D. In 1959.

听力原文: Barbara Sanders is a wife and the mother of two children, ages 2 and 4. Her husband, Tom, is an engineer and makes an excellent salary. Before Barbara had children, she worked as an architect for the government, designing government housing. She quitted her job when she became pregnant, but is now interested in returning to work. She's been offered an excellent job with the government. Her husband feels it's unnecessary for her to work since the family does not need the added income. He also thinks that a woman should stay home with her children. If Barbara feels the need to do socially important work, he thinks that she should do volunteer work one or two days a week. Barbara, on the other hand, has missed the excitement of her profession and does not feel she would be satisfied doing volunteer work. She would also like to have her own income, so she does not have to ask her husband for money whenever she wants to buy something. She does not think it's necessary to stay home every day with the children and she knows a very reliable babysitter who's willing to come to her house. Tom does not think a baby-sitter can replace a mother and thinks it's a bad idea for the children to spend so much time with someone who's not part of the family.

What was Barbara's profession before she had children?

A.Fashion designer.

B.Architect.

C.City planner.

D.Engineer.

听力原文:Continuing our survey of the 19th century, let's take a look now at Harriet Beech

听力原文: Continuing our survey of the 19th century, let's take a look now at Harriet Beecher Stowe. (32) Now Stowe is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, a book that details the harshness of plantation life in the south. The book was extremely popular in the United States as well as in other countries. Ironically though, for the attention given to Uncle Tom's Cabin, it is far from Stowe's best work. She did write one other novel about life in the south. But much of her best work has nothing to do with the south at all. (33) In fact, Stowe's best writing is about village life in the New England's states in the 19th century. In reference to the customs of the villages she wrote about, Stowe claimed that her purpose was to reflect the images as realistically as possible. (34) She usually succeeded, for her settings were often described actually and in detail. In this sense, she was an important forerunner to the realistic movement that became popular later in the 19th century. She was one of the first writers to use local dialect for her characters when they spoke. And she did this thirty years before Mark Twain popularized the use of local dialect. It makes sense that Stowe would write about New England life, (35) since she was born in Connecticut. As a young woman there, she worked as a teacher. The teaching job helped lead to her first published work, a geography book for children. Later, when she was married, her writing helped support her family financially. Throughout her life, she wrote poems, travel books, biographical sketches and children's books as well as novels for adults.

32. What is Stowe best known for according to the passage?

33.What is Stowe's best writing mainly about?

34.Why was Stowe an important forerunner to the realistic movement?

35.Why did Stowe write about New England life?

(33)

A.A novel named Uncle Tom's Cabin.

B.The harshness of the plantation life.

C.Works about the south.

D.Works about the village life.

听力原文:W: Have you read the latest Tom Clancy's book?

M: No, I haven't. But I hear it's a best seller.

W: That's what I hear. I haven't read it either, but it has been on the New York Times' best seller list for three weeks now. I've been meaning to stop by a bookstore and get it.

M: I really like his books, but I usually wait until they come out in the paperback edition. I hate to pay the price of the hardback version.

W: Do you think they will make a movie out of this one? The movies based on his other books have been very successful.

M: I wonder if their success is due to the nature of his hero.

W: Jack Ryan?

M: Yes. He is so "all American", just the type of person that we all think a good American should be.

W: I think you might be right. We see so many characters in books and movies that are anything but admirable that it is refreshing to have the here be a good, clean, honest family man.

M: I guess the excitement and intrigue he builds into his stories are another reason we all like to read them.

W: Maybe those are the reasons. At any rate, millions of people read every book he writes.

M: Including us.

(27)

A.The man.

B.The woman.

C.Both of the two.

D.Neither of them.
