听力原文: In todays class, well discuss Toni Morrisons novel Beloved. As Im sure you al

l know, Morrison is both a popular and highly respected author and its not easy to be both. Born in 1931, Morrison has written some of the most touching and intelligent works on the African-American experience ever written by anyone. And yet to call her an African-American writer doesnt seem to do her justice. In many ways, shes simply an American writer and certainly one of the best. Beloved is a truly remarkable work. It was recommended for nearly every nature literary class, including the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and it in fact won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988. Morrison herself is distinguished for having won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. What makes Beloved unique is the skillful sure way in which Morrison blends intensely personal storytelling and American history, racial themes and gender themes, the experience of blacks with the experience of all people everywhere, the down-to-earth reality of slavery with the sense of mysterious spirituality. We will be paying special attention to these themes as we discuss this work and Im particularly interested in your views on the relative importance of grace and gender in this book. Is it more important that Sethe, the main character, is black, or that she is a woman? Which contributes more to her being? What does Morrison tell us about both? 23. What do we learn about Toni Morrison? 24. What honor did Toni Morrison receive in 1993? 25. What does the speaker tell us about Sethe, the main character, in Morrisons novel Beloved?24.

A.The Book Critics Circle Award.

B.The Nobel Prize for literature.

C.The Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

D.The National Book Award.

听力原文: The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems th
at four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their rooms after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive todays young people seem to be about their families," said one member of the research team. "Theyre expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. Theres more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They dont want to rock the boat." So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. "I always tell them when Im going out clubbing. As long as they know what Im doing, theyre fine with it." Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as Id done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that." Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. 22. What is the popular image of teenagers today? 23. What do we know about teenagers according to the study? 24. What do we know about todays parents compared with parents of 30 years ago? 25. What is the passage mainly about?23.

A.They don"t want to make family decisions.

B.They don"t want to share family responsibility.

C.They don"t want to go boating with their family.

D.They don"t want to cause trouble in their families.

听力原文:W: Todays Arts Report features Dan Parker of the American Indian Dance Theatre. M
r Parker, I understand your troupe performs traditional music and dance from many different Native American cultures. Can you give us an idea of some of the dances youll be doing in your performance tonight? M: Certainly. Well be doing one thats a war dance. Originally it was a story-telling device to recount battles. Another is the grass dance performed by the Plains Indians, where they actually flatten tall field grass to prepare it for a ceremony. W: Since your dancers are from many different tribes, how can you be sure the dances are done correctly? M: Everything we do has been approved by the elders of our tribes. Thats partly because we dont necessarily know each others styles or dances. But its also because its hard to get complete agreement — even within the same tribe — about exactly how the dance should be done. W: Anyone who attends one of your performances will notice that your company goes to a lot of trouble to provide detailed explanations of the origin of the dances, the music, the costumes, and so forth. Could you explain to our listeners why you do this? M: Good question. There are always concerns that traditional dances performed in a theatre are nothing more than a spectacle. Our explanations show that in our cultures dance is custom rather than entertainment. We also want to make it clear to our audience that we are not performing any dances used for holy ceremonies. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 13. What is the main topic of the conversation? 14. What is the purpose of the interview? 15. Why are the dances approved by the elders of the tribes?13.

A.To celebrate the opening of a new theatre.

B.To inform. people about a performance.

C.To broadcast an awards ceremony.

D.To announce a meeting of the tribal elders.

听力原文: The portable, paperless e-newspapers would be a huge environmental win, elimi
nating the need to cut down trees and burn gasoline delivering the traditional folded parcels to readers driveways. Like many technologies, however, e-paper has been slow to take off. In the past year, since Amazon introduced its Kindle electronic reading device, thousands of Americans have experienced the pleasures of e-books — but for most people, e-newspapers arent yet a reality. Millions of us already read paperless newspapers and magazines on the Web, but e-newspapers would offer different benefits for both readers and publishers. For consumers who already spend too many hours staring at PC screens, e-newspapers would offer portability and a simple reading environment, free from e-mail bells ringing or instant messages popping up mid-paragraph. Among publishers, theres real hope readers will pay subscription fees for those benefits, and that advertisers will pay considerably more for ads on e-readers than they do on the Web. For a primitive look at how e-newspapers might work, consider the Kindle. Amazon currently offers 24 newspapers for use on the device. Subscribers pay $5.99 to $14.99 per month, and each issue arrives wirelessly before sunrise. However, e-reader enthusiasts describe reading a newspaper on the Kindle as disappointing. The Kindles black-and-white screen doesnt handle photographs or graphics well, and its e-papers carry no advertising. Instead of offering well-designed pages that entice readers to skim a story they might otherwise skip, todays e-newspapers merely list headlines or tops of articles, which makes it hard to decide whats worth reading. Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard. 16. Which can best describe the benefit of e-newspapers? 17. What can we learn about Kindle? 18. Which is the disappointing feature of reading e-newspapers on the Kindle?16.

A.It offers 24-hour newspaper service.

B.It is only sold on Amazon"s website in the US.

C.It is a portable e-newspaper reading device.

D.It can be rented at $5.99 to $14.99 monthly.
