听力原文:M: Hello, Mary. Why do you look so upset?

W: Well, every February, candy, flowers and gifts are everywhere. But where is mine? I hate this St. Valentine's Day. Who on earth is this saint and why do we have to celebrate this holiday?

M: Oh, don't be so depressed; your Mr. Right is waiting for you not far away. Just be a little patient. And I can tell you that the saint himself was not very happy on this day either.

W: Why? That's interesting, tell me.

M: Well, there are several stories about this man from both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

W: That means we are not very sure of the exact history of it, are we?

M: Yes, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance.

W: Then what happened to this Valentine? Why did you say it's a tragedy?

M: Well, one story said that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. When he was a prisoner, Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, in which he signed "From your Valentine".

W: Wow, it's so sad and so romantic!

M: Well, so don't be upset anymore. At least your future Valentine will be there and alive.

W: That doesn't help. I'm still very frustrated.

(20)

A.They only send cards with "From your Valentine" written on it.

B.They exchange candy, flowers and gifts.

C.They go to church to pray.

D.They hold parties.

Why Would They Falsely Confess?

Why on earth would an innocent person falsely confess to committing a crime? To most people, it just doesn&39;t seem logical. But it is logical, say experts, if you understand what can happen in a police interrogation (审讯) room. Under the right conditions, people&39;s minds are susceptible(易受影响的) to influence, and the pressure put on suspects during police grillings (盘问) is enormous. _________ (46) "The pressure is important to understand, because, otherwise, it&39;s impossible to understand why someone would say he did something he didn&39;t do. The answer is: to put an end to an uncomfortable situation that will continue until he does confess." Developmental psychologist Allison Redlich recently conducted a laboratory to determine how likely people are to confess to things they didn&39;t do._________ (47) The researchers then intentionally crashed the computers and accused the participants of hitting the "alt" key to see if they would sign a statement falsely taking responsibility.

Redlich&39;s findings clearly demonstrate how easy it can be to get people to falsely confess: 59 percent of the young adults in the experiment immediately confessed._________(48) Of the 15-to- 16-year-olds, 72 percent signed confessions, as did 78 percent of the 12-to 13-year-olds.

"There&39;s no question that young people are more at risk," says Saul Kassin, Professor at Williams College, who has done similar studies with similar results. _________(49) Both Kassin and Redlich note that the entire "interrogation" in their experiments consisted of a simple accusation--not hours of aggressive questioning--and still, most participants falsely confessed.

Because of the stress of a police interrogation, they conclude, suspects can become convinced that falsely confessing is the easiest way out of a bad situation. _________ (50)

听力原文:M: You look happy. Did you sell lots of things at the store today?

W: No. I bought something. It was a great deal.

M: So what is it?

W: A laptop computer.

M: Really? That's great. They are really convenient. You can take them anywhere.

W: You are right. That's what I thought. I can use the computer at home and at my store.

M: What will you use it for at the store?

W: To keep track of all the things in the store. How much I sell them for and which article sells best, and what are the things in sufficient stock.

M: That's a good idea. But I didn't think you knew how to use a computer.

W: I have to say I don't.

M: Then why did you buy one?

W: I've heard so much about computers. And I've heard you can find so many interesting things online. I was walking past the computer store downtown. I saw they had computers on sale.

M: So you went into the store to ask a few questions.

W: That's right. And I met a nice, young salesman. He showed me lots of things a computer can do. I just had to buy one.

M: So now who is going to teach you to use it?

W: You are.

听力原文:W: First of all, I'd like you to tell me a bit about what you've been doing.

M: Well, I left school after I'd done my A-levels.

W: What subjects did you take?

M: French, German and Art.

W: Art?

M: Well, I really wanted to study Art. But a friend of my father's offered me a job-he's an accountant in the city.

W: I see. In your application, you say that you only spent nine months with this firm of accountants. Why was that?

M: Well, to be quite honest, I didn't like it so I got a place at the Art College a year ago.

W: Did your father mind?

M: Well, he was rather disappointed at first. He's an accountant too, you see.

W: Have you any brothers or sisters?

M: Two brothers, both at school. One's eleven, the other's fifteen taking his O-levels this year.

W: Right. What do you do in your spare time?

M: I like jazz and folk music; I go to the theater occasionally and act a bit myself. I read quite a lot, and I've done a bit of photography. Also, I've traveled a lot.

W: Very interesting, Mr. Plant. I think that's all I wanted to ask about your background.

Why didn't Mr. Plant continue his study after he finished school?

A.He did not like to study.

B.He had to work to support his family.

C.A friend of his father's offered him a job.

听力原文:Torn: Hi, Mary. Do you like music?

Mary: Yes, very much, especially classical music.

Tom: Yes, I do. You know rock stars play exciting music and they always wear unusual clothes. I often go to their concerts.

Mary: Oh, do you? I don't understand why rock stars are so famous?

Tom: Oh, it's because of their fans that rock stars are famous and earn a lot of money. You know their fans go to their concerts, buy their records and wear the same kind of clothes.

Mary: I see. Did you watch TV last night?

Tom: No, I didn't. I went to a concert last night and got back home very late. What was on?

Mary: Zed Hawks was interviewed on TV last night.

Tom: Really, he is one of my favorite stars. He is world famous and he is also very rich. At least I suppose so. He has given concerts in twelve countries and sold over twenty million records.

Mary: Yes, you are right. He owns three magnificent houses, five cars and a private plane too.

Tom: What did he say on the TV interview?

Mary: He didn't say anything. During the TV interview Anita Lyons suggested that Zed should behave better because his fans imitate him.

Tom: Yes, go on.

Mary: He reacted very angrily, and walked out. The interview lasted less than two minutes. I was disappointed when I heard this. He really behaved badly. You know like politicians and film stars, rock stars need the public. They earn their money from the public. So why shouldn't the public criticize them? I'm not saying that famous people should always behave well. What I'm saying is that they shouldn't complain when they are criticized. If they do, they will lose their fans. I'm not a fan of Zed Hawks any more.

How do fans imitate rock stars?

A.They play music.

B.They behave badly.

C.They wear the same kind of clothes.

D.They go to their concerts.
