NEW YORK (Variety)--Eight years after his death, prolific science-fiction author Isaac
Asimov has suddenly arrived as a hot Hollywood commodity, with screen deals for his novels and short stories landing all over town.A deal dosed late last week at Warner Bros to adapt the Asimov short story "The Ugly Little Boy" into a film. The picture will be produced by Denise DiNovi and Demi Moore as a starting vehicle for Moore. In other recent deals, Fox has optioned Asimov's most popular novel series, "Foundation,' for Shekhar Kaput ("Elizabeth") to direct; Paramount is working on turning "End of Eternity" into a film that Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") will likely direct from a script. by "Total Recall" co-writer Gary Goldman; and Sony Pictures Family Entertainment is developing into an animated film series "Norby, the Mixed Up Robot," a series of 10 children's novels that Asimov wrote with his wife Janet, who'll act as creative consultant. Most of the deals will be worth seven-figure paydays if the films get made.Asimov wrote more than 460 works in either book or short-story form. While he wrote some nonfiction and mysteries, his speciality was sci-fi, with futuristic stories that were alien-free and high on pro-humanistic themes. His work has influenced many prominent sci-fi filmmakers, but Asimov action had been sparse. The most recent adaptation was the Robin Williams picture "Bicentennial Man." Part of the reason was that Asimov' s sole passion was his books and his family. He was hardly pushy(进取心的) about getting his works adapted, known to grant film options for as little as $50.The catalyst for the surge in screen activity is that Asimov's estate is now represented by Crested By, a partnership created 1- 1/2 years ago by Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza, who currently handle the screen rights of about 200 major sci-fi, fantasy and horror authors.

Hong Kong's once booming movie industry--one of the world's biggest——faces extinction as v
ideo piracy(盗版)becomes more and more popular. Gone are the days when film fans swarmed to cinemas to see latest-released local movies. "the Hong Kong film industry will disappear in a few years unless something is done," said Woody, chief executive of the Motion Picture Industry Association.

The industry started going downhill in the early 1990s when major investors backed off in the face of rising copyright piracy. "since the Taiwanese have stopped investing in or buying the copyright for Hong Kong movies at very high prices, there's not too much money coming in from Taiwan," a director said. "Taiwan money had funded at least half of the industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s". she said. Hong Kong made 86 movies in 2002, a fifth of the 426 produced in 1994. The industry employs just 5,000 people now, down from 30,000 in 1994. The industry's fading attraction has also dimmed the careers of its stars. Now, besides making far fewer films, they have turned to other fields, such as drama, television, radio or business.

Copyright piracy is at the heart of the problem. The widespread sale of pirated video compact discs has drawn audiences away from the big screen or genuine products. Pirated editions flood Hong Kong, with shops selling VCDs of the latest local and Hollywood movies for as little as HK $100 (US $13) for six discs. By contrast, a movie ticket costs about HK $50 (US $6.4). Hollywood studios have threatened to stop bringing in their latest movies unless piracy is brought under control. Making a bad situation worse, Hong Kong's economy began to sour in late 1997 amid Asia's financial crisis.

With the industry in the depression, top members of the Hong Kong film industry, such as actors Jackie Chan and Chow Yurt-fat and director John Woo, now spend more time in Hollywood.

In a vicious(恶性的) cycle, the talent drain reduces the motivation for audiences to watch local movies. If the decline continues, more industry professionals will seek work overseas.

What is the main cause of the problem of the movie industry in Hong Kong?

A.The government's interference.

B.Asia's financial crisis.

C.The copyright piracy.

D.The vicious cycle.

These five films are different from the ones that are often nominated for best picture. They are all realistic films for adults that deal with serious political or social issues. "Brokeback Mountain" received 8 nominations, the most of any movie this year. They include best director for Aug Lee and nominations for two actors and one actress in the film. "Brokeback Mountain" is the story of two young cowboys in the western state of Wyoming. They fall in love during the 1960s. They marry young women and have children. Bennett Miller directed "Capote," another nominee for best picture. It is a true story about the writer Truman Capote. It tells about his relationship with two men sentenced to be executed for killing a family in a small town in Kansas. Capote wrote about the killings in his famous book, "In Cold Blood."

The last nominee for best picture is "Munich," directed by Steven Spielberg. It is also based on true events. "Munich" deals with the killing of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian terrorists. That happened at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, in 1972. The movie is about Israeli agents and their efforts to find and kill the men responsible for the deaths.

ENGLISH, THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE

English is spoken as a native language by around 377 million people, and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language. English has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion.

The domination of the English language globally is a sure thing. English is the language of international communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, media and the Internet.

British colonialism in the 19th century and American capitalism and technological progress in the 20th century were undoubtedly the main causes for the spread of English throughout the world. From the fifteenth century, the British began to sail all over the world and became explorers, colonists and imperialists. They took the English language to many places. For the last hundred years, the USA has played a leading role in most parts of the world. The Hollywood film industry also attracted many foreign artists in quest of fame and fortune and the number of American films produced every year soon flooded the market.

However, the future of English as a global language will depend very largely on the political, economic, demographic and cultural trends in the world.

听力原文:M: Did you know that astronauts have made commercial products in space?

W: No, I wasn't aware of that. What kind of products?

M: Tiny plastic beads with a little hole through it.

W: Tiny balls? Do you mean to tell me that astronauts have nothing better to do than make jewelry beads in space? It seems to me they could make more useful things out there.

M: Oh, but these little balls aren't for jewelry. They can be used for scientific purposes to conduct cancer research .

W: That sounds better, but why make such objects in space rather than on earth?

M: Because earth gravitational pull affects the beads. They produced on earth are distorted, not exactly tumid. The ones made in space are precisely round.

W: Sounds reasonable.

(23)

A.Astronauts' clothing.

B.Products made in space.

C.Costume jewelry.

D.Problems in manufacturing.

M: Well, I've got to write a paper about Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, and I'm really struggling. There are hundreds of books, and I just don't know where to be gin.

W: Your topic sounds pretty big. Why don't you narrow it down to something like..., uh...the history of the studios during that time?

M: You know, I was thinking about doing that, but more than 30 books came up when I typed in "movie studi os."

W: You could cut that down even further by listing the specific years you want. Try adding "1930s" or "1940s" or maybe "Golden Age",

M: "Golden Age" is a good idea. Let me type that in...Hey, look, just 6 books this time. That's a lot better.

W: Oh...another thing you might consider..., have you tried looking for any magazine or newspaper articles?

M: No, I've only been searching for books.

W: Well, you can look up magazine articles in the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. And we do have the Los Angeles Times available over there, you might go through their indexes to see if there's any thing you want.

M: Okay. I think I'll get started with these books and then I'll go over the magazines.

W: If you need any help, I'll be over at the Reference Desk.

M: Great, thanks a lot.

A.Searching for reference material.

B.Watching a film of the 1930's.
