听力原文:M: Yes, we're lucky to have so much variety now. Though, as I said, these vegetab
les are not exactly new-- just new to us! People in other countries have been using them for years. Do you use any of them?

W: Well, I have tried one or two ... mainly to see if my son, Paul, would eat them. I'm very worried about him, as a matter of fact. He flatly refuses to eat vegetables...except potatoes.

M: But it's a very common problem. How old is your son?

W: He's almost ten. He's a strong boy and loves sports. And he always has plenty of energy...It's just that I'm concerned about the future.

M: But what is his diet like generally? I mean, does he eat properly...apart from the lack of vegetables?

W: Well, he has a healthy appetite and he would eat chips forever...always covered in ketchup or tomato sauce.

M: Ah! That's also very common these days. All those sauces appeal to children because of the sugar content.

W: They don't have sugar in them, do they?

M: Ummm, I'm afraid they do!

W: Well, that explains it, I suppose. Paul does have a very sweet tooth. He'd do anything for sweets or ice cream. But what can I do to persuade him to eat vegetables?

M: Well, if he likes sauces, you can make wonderful, healthy salads these days from all sorts of different green leafy vegetables—different types of lettuce for vitamin B, spinach which provides vitamin A and iron, parsley and watercress which are also rich in iron...

W: Ummm ... I could try that, I suppose. I know he likes, what's it called, Thousand Island salad dressing ...

M: And I always recommend vegetable sticks to mothers who have your problem—you know, instead of letting him have chocolate bars or biscuits, get into the habit of giving him mw carrot sticks to nibble at.

W: That's a good suggestion.

(27)

A.It is healthy.

B.It contains sugar.

C.It doesn't have sugar in them.

D.It is sour.

His Own Way to Express Love

Yesterday was our three-year anniversary. We didn"t do anything romantic; we just walked hand in hand and talked about our past and the future. This was pretty much what I had expected.

Andy is an unromantic guy : no sweet words or roses. Smart as he is, he is a little bit shy expressing his love. In contrast, I am an outspoken(直言不讳) girl who likes to show her feelings directly. So needless to say, I often feel that he is insensitive. I envy other girls who are surrounded by sweet words.

I was in this sullen mood until I heard a beautiful sentence one day: "If one does not love you in the way you like, it does not mean that he does not love you. " This simple but sensible sentence made me think about our happy days and recall his deep concern for me.

One,cold winter night, I got a high fever. He hurried to my dormitory and took me to the hospital. He was in such a hurry that he even forgot to wear socks. After arrival, he ran through the hospital handling all the formalities(手续 ). When I was put on a drip (点滴), he told me interesting stories to make me happy. Being held in his warm arms and listening to his tender(温柔的) voice, I had never felt so safe and comfortable. Gradually, I fell asleep. When I woke up 15 minutes later, he was still mumbling(咕哝地说) to me. He explained that if he had stopped talking I would have woken up. At that moment, I found love in his eyes.

Another time, I had a bad quarrel with my best friend. Although I knew it was my fault, I refused to admit it. I was angry when he insisted I apologize to her. He said that it was difficult to admit a mistake, but this was what everyone shduld do. The next morning, I apologized to my friend and asked for her forgiveness.

My unromantic boyfriend cares about my health like my father, understands me like my mother"and helps me like my elder brother.

Who is Andy? . 查看材料

A.The writer"s father.

B.The writer"s uncle.

C.The writer"s elder brother.

D.The writer"s boyfriend.

听力原文:W: I read that your company is downsizing again. What will that mean for your job

M: It means I'm out of a job.

W: That's bad news. This has happened to you before, hasn't it?

M: Yes. This will be the third time in five years and I'm ready to stop.

W: What do you mean? You're going to quit working?

M: No, I'll still be working, but not for a company. I'm going to be my own boss.

W: Doesn't that make you a little nervous? You won't have all the benefits that go with working for a company—no retirement, no health insurance.

M: That is the bad part of it, but I am really tired of being dependent on the whims of big business. It seems that it hasn't been all that secure for me.

W: What will you do?

M: I've had a couple of friends who have gone out on their own. They say it is the best thing that ever happened to them.

W: I know it is the secret dream of a lot of people to be their own boss, especially the younger generation.

M: One of my friends just takes temporary jobs. Companies are looking for people with his skills, but only on a temporary basis. So he goes from one company to another, depending on where they need him. He's able to set his own working hours and he makes a lot more than he was when he was working full time. He really likes the freedom he enjoys.

W: What does he do when he doesn't have any jobs coming in?

M: He goes to a temporary employment agency. It seems he always finds work and at double what he used to make.

W: I hope you find just the right thing for your skills. It would be nice to have a job that gave you more freedom.

M: That's why I'm making the change. I want to be able to spend the extra time with my family and it will be great to be working out of my home instead of going to the office every day.

W: Good luck! With your attitude and ability, I'm sure you'll do well.

Contacts (交往) between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twe

Contacts (交往) between Japan and the rest of the world have grown a great deal in the twentieth century. In the last thirty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world.

Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder the foreign businessman and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners.

The American businessman, for example, wants to start talking business immediately. He wants quick decisions. He does not wait. The Japanese, on the other hand, likes to arrive at decisions gradually after giving them a great deal of thought.

Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means "Yes" or "No". This is because of cultural difference for a Japanese to say "No" directly.

In English, it is easy to say "No" to something we do not want to do. But in Japan it is very difficult to say "No". To refuse an invitation or a request with "No", or a similar phrase, is felt to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish (自私) and unfriendly. So instead of saying "No" directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid saying "No". These enable them to avoid hurting other people's feeling. However, this often makes communication with the Japanese difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.

Paragraph One tells us that______.

A.it is not always easy for foreigners to do business in Japan

B.Japan is a very important country for businessmen

C.business contacts between Japan and the West are important

D.Japanese businessmen do business all around the world

The job was done, and it was time for a last cigarette. Eddie began tapping the pockets of
his overalls, looking for the new packet of Marlboro he bought that morning. It was not there.

It was as he swung around to look in his toolbox for the cigarettes that Eddie saw the lump. Right in the middle of the brand new bright red carpet, there was a lump. A lump the size of a packet of cigarettes.

"I've done it again? said Eddie angrily. "I've left the cigarettes under the carpet?

He had done this once before, and taking up and refitting the carpet had taken him two hours. Eddie was determined that he was not going to spend another two hours in this house. He decided to get rid of the lump another way. It would mean wasting a good packet of cigarettes, nearly full, but anything was better than taking up the whole carpet and fitting it again .He turned to his toolbox for a large hammer.

Eddie didn't want to damage the carpet itself, so he took a block of wood and placed it on top of the lump. Then he began to beat the block of wood as hard as he could. He kept beating, hoping Mrs. Vanbrugh wouldn't hear the noise and come to see what he was doing. It would be difficult to explain why he was hammering the middle of her beautiful new carpet... The lump was beginning to flatten out.

After three or four minutes, the job was finally finished. Eddie picked up his tools, and began to walk out to his car. Mrs. Vanbrugh accompanied him. She seemed a little worried about something.

"Young man, while you were working today, you didn't by any chance see any sign of Armand, did you? Armand is my bird. I let him out of his cage, you see, this morning, and he's disappeared. He likes to walk around the house, and he usually just comes back to his cage after an hour or so and gets right in. Only today he didn't come back. He's never done such a thing before, it's most peculiar..."

"No, madam, I haven't seen him anywhere," said Eddie, as he reached to start the car.

And he saw his packet of Marlboro cigarettes on the panel, where he had left it at lunchtime....

And he remembered the lump in the carpet...

What did Eddie want to do when he had finished fitting the carpet?

A.To have a cigarette.

B.To hammer the carpet flat.

C.To put back his tools.

D.To start work in the dining room.

Between the innocence of babyhood and the seriousness of manhood we find a delightful
creature called a“ boy ” . Boys come in different sizes, weights, and colors, but all boys have the same belief: to enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day and to fill the air with noise until the adult males pack them off to bed at night. Boy are found everywhere – on top of, under, inside of, climbing on, swinging from, running around, or jumping to. Mothers spoil them, little girls hate them, older sisters and brothers love them, and God protects them. A boy is TRUTH with dirt on its face. BEAUTY with a cut on its finger, WISDOM with chocalate in its hair, and the HOPE of the future with a snake in its pocket.

When you are busy, a boy is a trouble – maker and a noise. When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly or else he becomes a wild creature bent on destroying the world and himself with it.

A boy is a mixture – he has the stomach of a horse, the digestion (消化力 ) of stones and sand, the energy of an atomic bomb, the curiosity of a cat, the imagination of a superman, the shyness of a sweet girl, the brave nature of a bull, the violence of a firecracker, but when you ask him to make something, he has five thumbs (拇指 ) on each hand.

He likes ice cream, knives, saws, Christmas, comic books, woods, water (in its natural habitat), large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday mornings, and fire engines. He is not much for Sunday schools, company, schools, books without pictures, music lessons, neckties, barbers, girls, overcoats, adults, or bedtime.

Nobody else is so early to rise, or so late to supper. Nobody else gets so much fun out of trees, dogs, and breezes. Nobody else can put into one pocket a rusty knife, a half eaten apple, a three-feet rope, six cents and some unknown things.

A boy is a magical creature – he is your headache but when you come home at night with only shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with two magic words, “ Hi, Dad! ”
