Few observers have a better view of that ocean of exchanging gossip called E-mail than Mar

k Sunner. The chief technology officer of E-mail management company MessageLabs, Sunner oversees a network that processes 4.5 million letters each day. Servers operated and maintained by MessageLabs manage mail delivery and routing for a number of companies, including Bank of England and Condé Nast Publications. In fact, all of MessageLabs’ customers are corporations whose daily E-mail output and inflow has soared with the growth of the Web. “E-mail usage has increased massively in the last couple of years,” he says. Indeed, MessageLabs estimates that it has gone from 10 a day per employee as recently as two years ago to more like 20 or 30 now.

The implications for Corporate America are equally huge. According to E-mail researcher and consultant David Ferris, companies can expect the volume of E-mail coursing through their servers to grow 60% to 80% in 2002. And as individual messages grow in size - they’re now more likely to contain memory - companies could end up paying 100% to 150% more just this year on systems to store and manage those messages. That’s why tech consultancy Radicati Group expects demand for soft ware that manages E-mail, such as Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes, to grow from $2.6 billion in sales today to $4.4 billion by 2005. Too much of this money will be spent in controlling pure junk. About 20% of the E-mail MessageLabs manages is unwanted, according to Sunner - who adds that about 1.25% of all the E-mail his company moves contains useless attachments. Already, the cost of handling spam(垃圾邮件)is estimated at $8.6 billion worldwide, according to a 2001 European Union study. And the barrage of pornographic spam has made some companies worried that employees might sue on grounds of disturbance arising from exposure to unwanted unpleasantness.

The first sentence of this passage “Few observers have a better view of that ocean of exchanging gossip called E-mail than Mark Sunner” most probably means ____.

A.Mark Sunner clearly know the E-mail is wasting resources

B.no one knows the fact that E-mail is gossip exchanging way but Mark Sunner

C.Mark Sunner does not know anything about the E-mail

D.the Mark Sunner always concentrated on the ocean of the junk E-mail

Which of the following is NOT true about MessageLabs?A.It is an E-mail management company.

B.All of MessageLabs’ customers are corporations.

C.Mark Sunner is the chief technology officer of MessageLabs.

D.The company puts the great emphasis on dealing with the junk E-mail.

The word “that” in the last sentence of the third paragraph most possibly means ____.A.it is expected that Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes grow from $2.6 billion in sales today to $4.4 billion by 2005

B.the junk E-mail has been overloaded in the Internet

C.the increase of individual messages needs more staff

D.the company has paid 100% to 150% for individual message storage

What is the best title for the passage?A.The E-mail Monster.

B.MessageLabs Business Introduction.

C.To Avoid E-mail Surge.

D.E-mail Destroys Everything.

The following statements about the E-mail have been mentioned EXCEPT ____.A.Sunner oversees a network that processes 4.5 million letters each day

B.according to David Ferris, companies can expect the volume of E-mail passing through their servers to grow not more than 50% in 2002

C.too much money has been spent in controlling the junk E-mail

D.some employees might take legal action in accordance with annoyance arising from exposure to some unpleasant resources

Questions are based on the following passage.

It is a wise father that knows his own child, but today a man can boost his paternal (fatherly)wisdom —— or at least confirm that he"s the kid"s dad. All he needs to do is shell out $30 forpaternity testing kit (PTK) at his local drugstore —— and another $120 to get the results.

More than 60,000 people have purchased the PTKs since they first become availablewithout prescriptions last years, according to Doug Fogg, chief operating officer ofIdentigene, which makes the over-the-counter kits. More than two dozen companies sell DNAtests directly to the public, ranging in price from a few hundred dollars to more than $2,500.

Among the most popular: paternity and kinship testing, which adopted children can useto find their biological relatives and families can use to track down kids put up for adoption,DNA testing is also the latest rage among passionate genealogists —— and supports businessesthat offer to search for a family"s geographic roots.

Most tests require collecting cells by webbing saliva (唾液) in the mouth and sending it tothe company for testing. All tests require a potential candidate with whom to compare DNA.

But some observers are skeptical. "There is a kind of false precision being hawked bypeople claiming they are doing ancestry testing," says Trey Duster, a New York Universitysociologist. He notes that each individual has many ancestors —— numbering in the hundredsjust a few centuries back. Yet most ancestry testing only considers a single lineage (世系),either the Y chromosome (染色体) inherited through men in a father"s line or mitochondrial(线粒体) DNA, which is passed down only from mothers. This DNA can reveal geneticinformation about only one or two ancestors, even though, for example, just three generationsback people also have six other great-grandparents or, four generations back,14 other great-great-grandparents.

Critics also argue that commercial genetic testing is only as good as the referencecollections to which a sample is compared. Databases used by some companies don"t relyon data collected systematically but rather lump together information from different researchprojects. This means that a DNA database may have a lot of data from some regions and notothers, so a person"s test results may differ depending on the company that processes theresults.

According to the passage, what is PTK used to? 查看材料

A.To locate one"s birth place.

B.To promote genetic research.

C.To find out if one is the father of a child.

D.To help improve one"s intelligence.

Wikipedia Imposes New Curbs (约束) on Editing Articles

Wikipedia, the famous online encyclopedia, is looking to impose more discipline with new restrictions on the editing of articles.

The latest changes come as Wikipedia tries to balance a need for credibility and a desire for openness. While anyone can still edit entries, the site is testing pages that won"t register changes until they are approved by an experienced Wikipedia editor. If the site"s users respond well to the test run, the new restrictions will apply to all entries for living people in the next few weeks.

The idea is to block the kind of vandalism(故意破坏 )that has damaged some pages. In one of the most recent embarrassments, US Democratic Senators Robert Byrd was prematurely declared dead by the editors. Still, Wikipedia risks discouraging legitimate editing if restrictions on changes or additions become too burdensome, keeping articles from getting better or keeping up with events.

That may be especially true on more obscure pages with fewer active volunteers to approve edits timely.Aware of the risks, Wikipedia has set the criteria for "experienced editor" status relatively low.Users who are registered for a few days can give changes, said Jay Walsh, a spokesman for the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which runs the site.

A more uniform. system for filtering changes on Wikipedia represents a step back from the site"s original philosophy, which called for creating the collective knowledge of volunteer editors without any major restrictions.

Some observers believe Wikipedia must continue tightening editing policies if it wants to gain credibility. "I"m just waiting for the other shoe to drop," said Erie Goldman, director of the High Tech Law Institute at the Santa Clara University School of Law. "My hope is that Wikipedia still exists and is still considered a useful site," Goldman said. "But it will be at that point a very tightly controlled site. It won"t have that veneer (外表) of a site that anyone can contribute to. They haven"t closed the drawbridge (吊桥) . People can still get in. But it keeps going up and up and up."

Separately, the Omidyar Network, a philanthropic (博爱的,慈善的 ) investment group started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, said on Tuesday it is committing $2 million over two years to the Wikimedia Foundation. Omidyar Network"s grant will support Wikimedia"s goals of bringing free educational content to people around the world and supporting more people to help create that content.

A.Now not everybody can edit entries in Wikipedia.

B.Fewer restrictions will be posed on the edition of entries.

How does Science Proceed?

How exactly does science work? How do scientists go about "doing" science? Ordinarily we think science proceeds in a straightforward way. Ideally, scientists make observations, formulate hypotheses, and test those hypotheses by making further observations. When there is difference between what is observed and what is predicted by the hypothesis, the hypothesis is reviewed. Science proceeds in this way, which is a gradual method of finding the best fit between observation and prediction.

But this idealized version of how one "does" science is naive.Although science demands proof that observations made by one observer be observable by other observers using the same methods. It is by no means clear that even when confronted with identical phenomena different observers will report identical observations.

And it is most certain that, even if the same observations are made, the conclusions as to the meaning of the observations frequently differ.

The fact is that all of us scientists included, see differently. Variations in human perception are well known and have been studied extensively. Distortions in perceptions are frequently seen among observers, even though they may be in identical settings viewing identical phenomena. A documented misperception from history can be found in the experience of Darwin. His ship, Beagle, after anchoring off the Patagonian coast, sent off a landing party in small rowboats. Amazingly, the Patagonian natives watching from shore were blind to the Beagle, but could easily see the tiny rowboats. They have no prior experience of huge sailing ships, but small rowing vessels were an everyday part of their life. Rowboats fit their model of the world but huge ships did not.Their model determined their perceptions.

Our ideas that science proceeds on an utterly objective and straightforward basis ignores the distortions of reality imposed by our own perceptual apparatus. In many cases we see what we have been trained to see, what we are used to seeing. If a subject is fitted with special glasses that are designed to invert the visual field, at first the subject sees everything upside down. After a period of time, as the glasses continue to be worn, a correction is made by our perceptual mechanism and the image is flipped, so that the world once again appears erect.

What is the main idea of the passage? 查看材料

A.The research methods used by scientists

B.Observation and human perception variation

C.The relation between hypothesis and observation

D.The human perceptual mechanism
