Gentlemen,

I have been told by Mr.John L.Pak, Credit Manager, The Business Book Publishing, New York, with whom I believe you are acquainted, that you are expecting to make some additions to your accounting staff in June.I should like to be considered an applicant for one of these positions.

You can see from the data sheet that is enclosed with this letter that I have had five years of varied experience in the book business. The companies for which I have worked have given me permission to refer you to them for information about the quality of the work I did while in their employment.

My work was in the Credit Department and in the Accounting Department in both companies, with some experience also in inventory control. In both positions, I have been assigned with the daily office administration. The courses taken at Central Commercial and the Bronx Community College specifically prepare me for doing the accounting required in your department.

I hope that you will give me an interview at some time convenient to you.If there is further information that you wish in the meantime, please let me know.I can always be reached at the address given at the beginning of this letter.

Very truly yours,

Relationship between Morals and Architecture

There is a closer relationship between morals and architecture and interior decoration 51 we suspect. Huxley has pointed out that Western ladies did not take frequent baths 52 they were afraid to see their own naked bodies, and this moral concept delayed the 53 of the modern white-enameled bathtub for centuries. One can understand 54 in the design of old Chinese furniture there was so little consideration for human 55 only when we realize the Confucian atmosphere in which people moved about. Chinese redwood furniture was designed for people to sit 56 in, because that was the only posture approved by society.

Even Chinese emperors had to sit on a (n ) 57 on which I would not think of 58 for more than five minutes, and for that matter the English kings were just as badly off. Cleopatra went about 59 on a couch carried by servants, because 60 she had never heard of Confucius. If Confucius should have seen her doing that, he would certainly have struck her shins with a stick, as he did 61 one of his old disciples, Yuan Jiang, when the latter was found sitting in an 62 posture. In the Confucian society in which we lived, gentlemen and ladies had to 63 themselves perfectly erect, at least on formal 64 , and any sign of putting one&39;s leg up would be at once considered a sign of vulgarity and lack of 65

Although there had been various small cameras developed, it was not until George Eastman i
ntroduced the Kodak in 1888 that the mass appeal of photography attracted America and Europe and thereafter spread quickly to the far corners of the earth. Eastman called his new famous camera the Kodak for no particular reason except that he liked the word. It was easy to remember and could be pronounced in any language.

An immediate consequence of Eastman's invention was a blizzard of amateur photographs that soon became known as snapshots. The word came from hunters' jargon. When a hunter fired a gun from the hip, without taking careful aim, it was described as a snapshot. Photographers referred to the process of taking pictures as shooting, and they would take pride in a good day's shoot the way country gentlemen would boast about the number of birds brought down in an afternoon.

Photography became not only easy but fun because of the Kodak. Almost overnight photography became one of the world's most popular hobbies. A new and universal folk art was born; the showing of one's latest pictures and the creation of family albums became popular social pastimes. Camera clubs and associations numbered their members in the millions. One ardent amateur was the French novelist Emile Zola, who took a lot of photographs of his family, friends, and travels. Interviewed about his favorite hobby in 1900, he observed, "I think you cannot say you have thoroughly seen anything until you have got a photograph of it."

"The little black box," as the Kodak was affectionately dubbed, revolutionized the way people communicated. "A picture is worth a thousand words" was the claim and there were literally billions of pictures. In one year alone -- 1988, the centenary of the invention of the Kodak -- it is estimated that almost thirty billion were taken in America alone. The impact of the sale of photographic equipment on the economy is equally mind-boggling.

Photography has played an essential role in the media revolution. It has greatly enhanced our ability to convey information, so that the concept of the global village has become a commonplace. Photographs have greatly extended our understanding of and compassion for our fellow human beings.

Did Mr. Eastman have the faintest idea of the power residing in his "little black box"?

What was the underlying significance of the invention of the Kodak?

A.It made the work of professionals more enjoyable.

B.It made picture-taking suddenly popular among ordinary people.

C.It marked the beginning of manufacturing small cameras.

D.It met the need of photographers in America and Europe.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to report on my recent investigation of the current situa
tion of China’s automobile market. Considering the fact that there is only one car for every 250 Chinese at present, the potential auto market is extremely attractive. China has cut its average tariff rate several times and promised to continue to cut its automobile import tariff. China has virtually opened its auto market to the outside world. China is seeking partners for its automobile industry, and we should walk up and take the opportunity.(英译汉)

Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They s
how that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature. At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginia Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress(国会), or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached Europe. Why didn’t Washington go to college? A. His family could not afford it

B. A college education was rather uncommon in his time

C. He didn’t like the young Virginian gentlemen

D. The author doesn’t give any reason

Washington felt uncomfortable in Congress debates because he__________.A.lacked practice in public speaking

B.felt his education was not good enough

C.didn’t like arguing and debating with people

D.felt that debating was like intellectual training

The reason why Washington didn’t visit France was probably that he__________.A.didn’t really care about going

B.didn’t know French leaders

C.couldn’t communicate directly with the French leaders

D.was too busy to travel

According to the author, __________.A.Washington’s lack of formal education placed him at a disadvantage in later life

B.Washington should have gone to France even though he could not speak French

C.Washington was not as good a president as Adams, Jefferson or Madison

D.Washington was a model for all Virginian gentlemen

The main idea of the passage is that Washington’s education __________.A.was of great variety, covering many subjects

B.was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his time

C.may seem poor by modern standards, but was good enough for his time

D.was rather limited for a president
