We can get this kind of information from written documents like diaries and town records, but we can also learn a lot from studying old family portraits.
Family portraits provide clues about things like the size of the family and the hobbies and tastes of family members. The number of children in a portrait, for example, indicates the size of the family, the types of clothing family members wore for the portrait suggest the popular fashions of the time. The objects that children hold in their hands can give clues about the games they played and their hobbies (34) . The background of a family portrait gives historians an idea of room size and furnishings and even the wealth and social position of the family (35) . All of these details help historians understand more about the everyday lives of some of the ordinary people from the past (33) .

听力原文: In the United States many parents teach their children at home by themselves. The U. S. Department of Education estimates there are 250,000 to 350,000 home-schooled children in the country.
The reasons of home-schooling vary widely. Children may be home-schooled because they are ill and cannot attend a normal school. Distance is the reason for children living on outback land or large farms. It may take hours to get to school and back home each day. Their parents think it inhumane to send their children to state boarding school. Some home schoolers think low of public school education which lacks of religious perspective. They want their children to learn not only traditional subject matter but strict religious teaching and a conservative political and social perspective. Other home-schoolers want to keep their children away from other children, because their family' s faith or lifestyle. is very different from that of those who attend the local school.
There are, of course, some drawbacks of home-schooling. Social isolation is the major problem. Children are naturally social creatures and love to form. friendship and learn in a group setting. Also, many home-schooled children may feel bored interacting with just their parents for many hours a day. And needless to say, not ail parents make good instructors.

The religious schools in America are usually nm by churches. Therefore they tend to be less expensive than private schools. When there is free education available to all children in the United States, why do people spend money on private schools? Americans offer a great variety of reasons for doing so. Some parents send their children to private schools because the classes there are usually smaller. In their opinion the public schools in their area are not of high enough quality to meet their needs. Private schools in the United States range widely in size and quality, and they offer all kinds of programs to meet the needs of certain students.

听力原文: In a time of low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only two percent of the Japanese respondents listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half of the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.
Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools.
Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities.
(30)
A.Because Japanese preschools cost less than those in America.
B.Because Japanese children have high academic achievement.
C.Because Japanese preschools pay much attention to the overall development of children.
D.Because there are only a few preschools in America.
听力原文: Some people think that the best time to begin studying a foreign language is in childhood and that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn another language. There is little evidence, however, that children in language classrooms learn foreign languages any better than people over age fifteen in similar classroom situations. In fact, adults have many advantages over children: better memories, more efficient ways of organizing information, longer attention spans, better study habits, and greater ability to handle complex mental tasks. Adults see learning a foreign language as necessary for education or career. In addition, they are particularly sensitive to correctness of grammar and appropriateness of vocabulary: two factors that receive much attention in most language classrooms.
You can indeed master a foreign language—as lots of adults do. The best time to learn a foreign language is when your need is the clearest and you have sufficient time. If you feel strongly the need to study a foreign language and if you have the time to do it, the best time to begin is now.
