听力原文: Ensuring the safety of passengers and aircraft is a major concern at airports. Security personnel operate metal detectors and X-ray machines that screen baggage for possible weapons or illegal substances. Security personnel also require that each passenger show photo identification before entering an aircraft. Many areas of an airport, especially those areas that contain critical equipment, are protected by security personnel and are off-limits to the public.

In the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, airport security became the responsibility of the federal government. The United States Congress enacted the Aviation and Transportation Security Act in response to the attacks, which bad exposed a number of weaknesses in airport and airline security. The new law expanded the number of baggage screeners, imposed standards for their training, and made them federal employees for a period of time. Beginning in January 2002, it required that all passenger luggage, including checked luggage, be screened. By the end of 2002, all checked luggage was to he put through special explosives-detecting devices. The law increased the number of armed federal air officials flying on domestic flights and required international airlines to turn over advance copies of their passenger lists to U.S. Customs officials for background checks to screen out suspected terrorists.

听力原文: In the Middle Ages, the Italian city of Venice assumed its role as the glassmaking centre of the western world. The Venetian merchant fleet ruled the Mediterranean waves and helped supply Venice's glass craftsmen with the technical know-how of their counterparts in Syria, and with the artistic influence of Islam. The importance of the glass industry in Venice can be seen in the number of craftsmen at work there(more than 8,000 at one point).

Until the end of the 13th century, most glassmaking in Venice took place in the city itself. However, the frequent fires caused by the furnaces led the city authorities, in 1291, to order the transfer of glassmaking to the island of Murano. The measure also made it easier for the city to keep an eye on what was one of its main assets, ensuring that no glassmaking skills or secrets were exported.

In the second half of the 15th century, the craftsmen of Mnrano started using quartz sand and potash made from sea plants to produce particularly pure crystal. By the end of the 16th century, 3,000 of the island's 7,000 inhabitants were involved in some way in the glassmaking industry.

(30)

A.Its merchant fleet ruled the Mediterranean.

B.The secrets of Syria's glassmaking were known by Venice's craftsmen.

C.Venice's glassmaking industry was artistically influenced by Islam.

D.It had more than 8,000 craftsmen at one point.

听力原文:Consumers are being confused and misled by the huge amount of environmental claim

听力原文: Consumers are being confused and misled by the huge amount of environmental claims made by household products, according to a "green labeling" study published by Consumers International on Friday.

The study was written and researched by Britain's National Consumer Council (NCC) for lobby group Consumers International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.

"While many good and useful claims are being made, it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy," said Consumers International director Anna Fielder.

The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain, Western Europe, Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average.

The report focused on claims made by specific products, such as detergents, insect sprays and some garden products. It did not test the claims, but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September 1999.

The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as "environmentally friendly" and "non-polluting" cannot be verified.

(3)

A.Consumers are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy.

B.Consumers are being confused and misled by the huge amount of environmental claims of household products.

C.Consumers protest that many household products make false environmental claims.

D.Governments should take measures to test the environmental claims made by products.

听力原文: Sharon Keating was worried about her kids when she got a divorce. Her daughter says, "I was feeling ... like down and sad and even though I didn't really show it."

Judith Wallerstein says problems from divorce can last for many years. They can show up when the kids are adults. As adults, the kids have trouble.

Wallerstein studied 93 children over a generation. The results can only be found in her book.

She says children of divorce are more likely to have problems with drugs. They are far more likely to seek therapy. About 40-percent of them do not marry. Their marriages fail at nearly twice the usual rate. It is hard for them to trust. They are afraid of failing.

Critics say Wallerstein had too few children in her study. Other things may be the cause of the kid's problems. The study does not compare kids from divorced families with kids from "healthy" families.

Wallerstein's families divorced a generation ago. Times have changed. People feel different about divorce. Today programs like Kid's Turn try to lessen some of the effects of divorce with family counseling. Talking about their feelings helps the kids get through it.

Since they know more about the problems, maybe the kids will be able to handle it.

(33)

A.Children of divorce are always happy.

B.Children of divorce sometimes feel sad but don't really show it.

C.Children of divorce are no! affected.

D.Children of divorce are always very angry.
