听力原文: Many African mothers carry babies on their back. In this way, a working mother knows that her baby is safe on her back while her hands are free for her work. On the other hand, the baby stays in close contact with his mother and feels safe and warm. However, back-nesting is not suitable in summer. Besides, (29) back-nesting does not give babies freedom and chance to use their hands and legs. Children need to observe and explore the environment. What's more, this sense of security given by back-nesting may be suddenly broken when the child can no longer be carried. He may be put down and expected to behave like a grown-up child. (30) But he has been over protected for so long that now he feels very insecure and many behave like a baby. Once I visited a friend's home, where the mother was carrying her eleven-month-old son on her back. I found the mother had nothing special to do with her hands and the baby was restless. I asked her to put the baby down. At first, (31 ) she didn't want to because she firmly believed that if she carried the baby on her back, he could sleep longer, keep quieter and make less mess. I tried my best to persuade her and finally she gave in. Immediately the child began examining the toy drum before him. He looked much live her and happier.

听力原文: Sekou Coumbassa is a diplomat who represents one of the new African nations. At present he is working on special assignment to his country's embassy in Washington. Like many African diplomats, he is very young--only twenty-eight years old. Before coming to Washington, he had had a year of diplomatic experience in another African country and then one more year in Paris. Sekou speaks two African languages. In addition, he speaks French fluently because it is the language used in the secondary schools in his country. He also studied English when he was in school. When he first came to Washington, his English was stiff and formal. It sounded like English that had been learned from a book. Sekou has an aptitude for language, however, it was one of the reasons he became a diplomat. After six months in Washington, he had become fluent in English. Sekou is in charge of cultural affairs for the embassy. The ambassador that Sekou works for is quite impressed with his work and has recommended him highly to the government at home. Sekou is very happy, he hopes to be an ambassador himself some day in the future.

听力原文: In the 19th century it was common to hear people in Europe and America say that the resources of the sea were unlimited. For example, a noted biologist writing in the mid 1800s commented that all of the great sea-fish industries are inexhaustible. Today there's evidence that the resources of the sea are as seriously threatened as those of the land and the air, and the concern of conservationists now includes sea-fish as well as the African elephant, the Indian tiger and the American eagle. Further, the threat to fish is more alarming in some ways than the threat to birds and land animals because fish are a much needed food resource. Many people throughout the world depend on fish as an important part of their diets, and a decline in the fish supply could have extensive effects on hunger and population.

(23)

A.That they were in infinite.

B.That they should be carefully conserved.

C.That they were declining.

听力原文: Ask the average American,"What is freedom?"You will probably hear,"It's being able to do what I want to do." When Americans think of freedom, they often think of individualism. They see themselves more as individuals than as members of a family or social group.

In American culture.freedom means equality. The Declaration of Independence states that"all men are created equal."That does not mean equal in abilities or status. For Americans, equality refers to equal worth and equal opportunity. Every individual should have an equal chance to improve his life.True,America has not always lived up to that ideal. For many years,Native Americans,African Americans and immigrants have protested their unequal treatment. But American culture still teaches that people can work hard and fulfill their dreams.Whether this idea is true or not, people hear rags-to-riches stories often enough to confirm it in the minds of many people.

Freedom arouses strong feelings for Americans. The idea of liberty binds people together in this"land of the free." However, problems still exist. One individual's freedom can conflict with the rights of others. Someone once said,"You have the freedom to swing your fist around if you want. But your freedom ends where my nose begins."People can also become too concerned about their own rights. They might demand special treatment. However, the path to freedom is not completely smooth.Even so,for Americans,no other road is really worth traveling.

What do Americans often think of when thinking of freedom?

A.Collectivism.

B.Equality.

C.Social group.

D.Individualism.

听力原文: In the next few decades, people are going to travel very differently from the way they do today. Everyone is going to drive electricallypowered cars, so in the few years, people won't worry about running out of gas. Some of the large auto mobile companies are really moving ahead with this new technology. F&C Mo tom, a major auto company, for example, is holding a press conference next week. After the press conference, the company will present its new electronically operated models. Transportation in the future won't be limited to the ground. Many people predict that traffic will quickly move to the sky. In the coming years, instead of radio reports about road conditions and highway traffic, news re ports will talk about traffic jams in the sky. But the sky isn't the limit. In the future, you will probably even be able to take a trip to the moon. Instead of listening to regular airplane announcements, you will hear someone say: the spacecraft to the moon leaves in 10 minutes. Please check your equipment. And remember no more than 10 ounces of carryon baggage are allowed.

听力原文: To help the people who are suffering from AIDS with drugs may need a lot of money. In Africa it may cost more than one person earns in one year. (30)However, some American hospitals throw away a lot of drugs every day. This made one man start to help the sick people in Africa.

The man is Lee Wildes. He lives in a small apartment in San Francisco. Five years ago he learned that he was sick with HIV. He took a vacation to Africa where he saw many people also had AIDS. (31)Lee was a nurse and he knows that the drugs worth of millions of dollars are thrown away by hospitals in the United States. So, when he came back, he began to collect drugs and send these drugs to Africa. Lee gets emails from people in Africa asking for AIDS drugs. He collects pills that are not needed from American hospitals and also from those who died from AIDS. He has sent pills for a hundred people in six African countries. Every year he travels to Africa to work with sick people and tries his best to help them.

(32)Giving left over drugs away is against the American law. Though he gives out drugs without a license, it is not likely he'll be taken to court for his kindly effort. There are now 25 million Africans sick with AIDS. Lee helps only 100 people, but it seems a great success for him.

(31)

A.He wants to make millions of dollars from doing so,

B.He believes the pills can help save patients there.

C.The thrown away pills were piling up in American hospitals.

D.He has established his own clinics on the African continent.

听力原文: In this lesson, I want to talk about the history of The White House. At first, most Americans didn't think there was anything particularly special about the White House. Few had ever seen it or had any idea what it looked like, and even the families who lived there found it completely inadequate. When it was built, the White House was the largest house in the country and it remained so until after the Civil War. But it served so many different purposes that little of it was available for the First Family to actually live in. The first floor, or "State Floor" was made up entirely of public rooms; and the president's offices, which where staffed by as many as 30 employees, took half of the second floor up. The First Family had to get by with the eight or fewer second-floor rooms that were left. By Lincoln's time, the situation was intolerable. The White House was open to visitors; office seekers, and the merely curious had no difficulty making their way upstairs from the official rooms on the first floor. Lincoln was so uncomfortable with the situation that he had a private corridor constructed. He also received a $ 20, 000 appropriation to improve the furnishings of the White House. The new furnishings did not last for more than a few years. When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, the White House fell into disarray. No one really supervised the White House during' the first five weeks.

听力原文: In societies in which individuals choose their own partners, young people typically dote before marriage. Dating is the process of spending time with future partners to become familiar with each other. Dates may take place in groups or between just two persons. When doting becomes more serious it may be called as engagement. Couples usually spend some period of time engaged before they marry. A woman who is engaged is known as the man's fiancee, and the man is known as the woman's fiance. Men will give an engagement ring to their fiancee as a symbol of the agreement to marry.

In the past, dating and engagement were special stages in the selection of a future husband or wife. Each stage represented an increasing level of promise and closeness. Although this remains true to some degree, since the 1960s these stages have tended to mix with one another.

In general, people tend to dote and many people with whom they have characteristics in common. Characteristics that couples tend to share include race, religion, economic status, age, and the social status of their parents.

In the United States, marital similarity has increased for some aspects and decreased for others in recent years. People seek partners who are from similar background. For example, an individual is more likely to many someone who has a similar mount of education. At the same time, Americans are less likely to require that the partners they want to marry have similar religion or social class. However, they still tend to marry someone of the same race. For instance, marriages between African Americans and whites make up less than 1 percent of all marriages in the United States.

(23)

A.After they date with each other for some time.

B.When the couple decide to get married soon.

C.When the man gives the woman engagement ting.
